Today is National Best Friend's Day. I have been lucky enough to have many amazing friendships throughout my life. These friendships are important to me and I work at sustaining them. In Is This Me? Amanda chooses to hide her disappointments and frustrations from her closest friends. Like Amanda, it wasn't always the case that I felt that sharing the ups, downs, highs, and lows of life was beneficial. For a period when I was young I believed that I should be strong and not burden friends with negative feelings or insecurities. What I learned is that all of what we feel makes us human and sharing with others binds us together. WebMD reports that having friends can help us live longer (see http://www.webmd.com/balance/features/good-friends-are-good-for-you). The Centre for Confidence and Well Being says: "Among children, attributes such as social competence, altruism, self-esteem and self-confidence have been found to be positively correlated to having friends. Friends are also there to reduce the stress and challenging developmental experiences that we are faced with particularly during adolescence and early adulthood."Today, my friends are some of the most important relationships in my life and I cherish being with them through the highs and lows!
Happy Best Friends Day!
