Sonia – Witch of the Week

YA urban fantasy Witch of the Week – Sonia

It is only fitting that if I give Theron a witch of the week slot, Sonia deserves one as well. For Sonia reigns as perhaps the most evil malefactor of them all in the Kingdom Journals series. We meet Sonia briefly in Kingdom of Embers when she joins her son, Thanatos, in battling the vampires who aim to retrieve the Lance of Longinus for Alena and Hunter. In Kingdom of Embers we get no further information about Sonia save that Orm and Chalondra are shocked she appears.

In Kingdom of Darkness Sonia also plays a small, yet pivotal role at the end of the book. Sonia stars as chief villain in Kingdom of Honor but mostly just through information we learn from the other characters. In the finale to the Kingdom Journals series, Kingdom of War, we find our heroes battling Sonia and her witches, fighting for the lance and their very lives. Still, we only know Sonia as the seeming mastermind of Michael’s coven’s plots against the witches of the trinity, Alena, Camille, and Hunter.

However, in the prequel to the series, that I published between the third and fourth books in the series, Kingdom of Honor and Kingdom of War, we learn much more about Sonia and her history. Although Kingdom of the Damned‘s main character is Anne, Alena’s mother, Sonia stars as Anne’s main nemesis throughout. Every time Anne gathers the vampires to attempt to create an organized governing body for them, Sonia and her son, Thanatos, attempt to disrupt their plans, killing many vampires.

Even in Kingdom of the Damned we’re not sure why Sonia hates the vampires so much. We know vampires and witches have been at war for centuries. Witches believe vampires are soulless creatures, spawned by Satan himself. Witches believe their role is to protect humans, who are the preferred food source for some vampires. And many witches feel it is their duty to rid the world of the blood-drinking demons.

I expose Sonia’s origin in the short story Of Witches and Vampires. We discover that Lilith is not only Sonia’s mother but the mother of the vampire species. And the plot thickens because even in this short tale we only see a bit of Sonia’s childhood. It is evident that I have much work to do in exposing Sonia’s true psyche and reasoning behind her passion for ending vampires. So many books to write and so little time…
