Lovelock Ones Genesis

Lovelock Cave entrance

Happy Tuesday! Here’s a bit about Lovelock Cave and how I formed the Lovelock Series. If you started reading in my newsletter continue here. For those just joining us make sure to read to the end to get more information about how Lovelock Ones started.

Lovelock is a town in central Nevada, named for the nearby Lovelock Cave. Piaute Native American legends tell of a group of native Americans called the Si-Te-Cah, a group of red-headed giants who terrorized their people. After a long war, the Piautes, and other surrounding tribes, trapped the Si-Te-Cah in Lovelock Cave. They stacked brush at the entrance and set it ablaze, killing the Si-Te-Cah. In 1924, Miners unearthed human remains and being large with red hair, corroborated the Paiute stories. (Findings by Ron Morehead, http://ronmorehead.com/lovelock-cave/)

The legend seems a little grim, but Lovelock Cave became the perfect setting for my community of rogue military soldiers searching for a cure for the epidemic. The novella I published in The Butterfly Book anthology became Native One, which, and along with an additional novella, Bred One, formed the full-length novel, Lovelock Ones, the first of the Lovelock Series.

Lovelock Ones was born out of an opportunity to write in an anthology produced by the group SASS (Supporting Authors to Stay Sane) Promotions. More than just highlighting indie authors, the goal was to give back to the world in some way. The organizers did some research on worldwide organizations and chose Doctors Without Borders. From this, the theme of healing grew. Proceeds from The S.A.S.S. Anthology, The Butterfly Box, centered around the theme of healing, benefits the organization still today when relief is so much in need.

My background in microbiology helped form a plot idea. It became a story set in 2069 about a girl and her family, torn apart by a second eminent flu epidemic, the last of which, along with global warming trends, all but decimated the earth’s population. Jema, her mother, and her sister, Nave, travel to a remote desert location Lovelock Cave, where they learn Nave has already contracted the virus. Ignoring community rules, Jema and her friend Troy devise a plan to save Nave.

Until next time, stay safe and healthy. Happy ready! – Tricia
