Realm Chronicles Faeries

Realm Chronicles faeries, being fae or fairies from the Realm Chronicles young adult fantasy book series, are similar in some ways to faeries in other literature, but also have some different qualities. I must admit that prior to starting the Realm Chronicles series with my first short story, Titania Rises, I did no research. I’d heard of Midsummer Night’s Dream, but never read or viewed the whole play. I’d read Lord of the Rings, and Arthurian legends about the lady of the lake, but hadn’t read any other faerie literature.
Realm Chronicles Faeries Attributes
It turns out that I didn’t know that faeries were typically harmed or weakened by iron. I did know that very often faeries are depicted as not being able to lie and having mischievous personalities. And I didn’t realize that in many depictions faeries don’t have wings. I took the more traditional route of wings on my faeries but strayed from the iron issue and lying issue. In the Realm Chronicles, faeries have wings and they can lie. But they don’t lie often, typically being a very upstanding, helpful, honorable, and gracious people.
The Realm Chronicles faeries live in Middle Earth, a realm tucked between the human realm and Sheol, or hell. The are the same size as humans but live only about fifty years. They typically are immune to illnesses and heal quickly. In their own realm they don’t possess any super-human strength or other supernatural powers, at least not most of them.
When these fae enter the human realm however they have the ability to hear the thoughts of other beings. They also possess super-human, senses, and speed. They may transform their bodies to look like any other beings and also become invisible to other beings. This qualities make them the perfect partners for battle in the human realm.
Realm Chronicles Faerie Life & Environment
The Fae Realm in Middle Earth connects to Upper Earth through faerie rings that allow light and rain to enter. The climate is a bit cooler than in Upper Earth and less light reaches the ground. The continents maintain the same shapes as in Upper Earth being formed by the same bedrock. But even with their access to the human realm, the fae maintain a simple lifestyle without technologies like electricity. They farm and hunt for their food, use carriages, although seldomly, preferring flight for travel. They weave cloth for clothing, make metal objects like spears and knifes, bows, and arrows, and use fires, candles, and torches for light and heat.
The fae are organized into nine kingdoms as shown below. Stewardship of the kingdoms is generally passed to the first born son. The rulers shoulder the burden of protecting their subjects from dangers lurking above and below their realm. Kobold, goblins, and ogres attack from Lower Earth and merfolk from Upper Earth trying to take the Fae Realm for themselves.
