YA Fantasy Fae Away

Young Adult Fae Fantasy Fae Away by Rose Garcia

For those following my most recent fantasy books, you may know that I’m currently fascinated by all things fae. But I hadn’t read any contemporary fae fantasies until this most recent read, Fae Away, by Rose Garcia. Years back I read The Lord of the Rings, Le Morte de Arthur and knew of Morgan le Fay, watched True Blood with Sookie Stackhouse, read The Adventures of Pinnochio, Cinderella, Peter Pan, and watched the movie Maleficent, so did have a little background on faeries.

I didn’t read any books for research before I published my fae fantasy, To be a Fae Queen, I just started writing. After finishing the book, thought I should know a bit about fae literature and researched traditional fae literature, powers, and lore. (If you want all my fae research you can join my fantasy fiend newsletter with the links at the end of the post.)

What I found is that my fae swayed a bit from the contemporary lore of fae. My fae aren’t harmed by iron, can’t compel others, and they have wings, to name a few differences. But, I digress.

I recently spoke with and interviewed young adult author Rose Garcia for my podcast. After talking to her, I became convinced I had to read her fae fantasies. And wow! I read the first book in four hours, one-clicked the second, and pre-ordered the third which is set to release at the end of December.

A bit more about Rose’s fae. They live on a plane above the earth. This seems super-cool to me because my fae live on a plane below the earth called Middle Earth. I’m calling her fae “Shimmer Fae” because they enter our world through “shimmers”, balls of light that can be stretched out to form portals to travel through. But the Shimmer Fae don’t come to earth anymore because years ago humans tried to take over their world. Now, it is forbidden for a fae to use a shimmer to portal into the human realm.

More about Rose Garcia’s Fae Away from the back cover…

Princess Celyse has two rules she must obey— never touch a portal, and never kiss a human.

Despite being born into the most powerful house in the faerie realm, Celyse dreads her life of duty and obligation. But everything changes when she finds a shimmery portal that offers a glance at the forbidden human realm. If discovered with the portal, it could mean her death. Yet she dares to peek anyway and finds herself face to face with a gorgeous human. Soon, she is visiting her would-be enemy nightly. Until a malicious suitor threatens her life and her kingdom.

Julio can see ghosts— it’s in his blood as the son of a powerful curandera.

With spirits drifting in and out of his life, Julio thinks having visions of an ethereal girl with silver hair is another part of the supernatural weirdness that happens to him. But when the very real girl shows up in the flesh, she brings a dire plea for help. Her faerie realm and his human realm are in danger, and only he can help. His head blares a warning against this deadly path while his heart urges him to do anything to save her. Including risk his own life.

My official review of Fae Away by Rose Garcia… 5*

This is the fist fae book I’ve read in years and perhaps only the second one ever (besides my own and Lord of the Rings). I went into this book very excited to learn about this fae realm and Celyse and Julio’s story. It did not disappoint. I finished the book in two sittings and was ready to one-click the next book right away.

This is also my first read from Rose Garcia. I loved every bit of this book. It had great pace, action, world-building, and several great surprises. Celyse is the twin princess of the most powerful rulers in the fae realm of Favenly. Her older twin sister will rise to the position of queen. At eighteen they will enter a year of courtship and marry.

But Celyse finds a shimmer, a portal that lets the fae enter the human realm. Always intrigued with the forbidden human world, she immediately opens the shimmer. She sees a boy named Julio and they become friends, talking every night for many months. But as her eighteenth birthday approaches, she knows she must break ties with him. She has a duty to fulfill and what could be between them when her kiss will kill him?

Her meeting with her first potential suitor goes awry. His actions plunge her into a series of events that lead her to many hidden truths. I won’t say more for this book has lots of juicy secrets to discover.
